Initially released on Janu“HuniePop” by aptly named developer and publisher “HuniePot” saw a rather large amount of buzz following its release for reasons beyond myself, but in particular it saw a substantial number of YouTube playthroughs including one by Markiplier that helped garner its mysterious popularity.

After some deliberation I concluded the safest course of action was to go through with the dating sim I had heard the most about and could be most confidently certain would be safe enough, “HuniePop.” I was promptly met with “Monster Prom: Second Term” whereupon I decided any further delving into the Steam page on dating sims would be a fruitless endeavour and potentially extremely hazardous to what remaining mental health second semester so far has left me with. Regardless, I opened the Steam store page on Thursday, February 14 to find what relevant and relatively new dating sim I would willingly subject myself to for at least the better part of an afternoon if I could help it.

HuniePop does have something sweet at the end of each level. On the other hand, it’s so replayable that you can spend many hours playing HuniePop alone (in all the meanings).

Its small size lets you install HuniePop even on old devices, and it won’t take much space or performance. It’s not, frankly speaking, the game to play in public. Console or mobile versions are not even planned. The game is so far only available for Windows, Linux, and OS X. What you cannot do, though, is broadcast your gameplay on Twitch: the game is banned there. They may want new items you can unlock for them. HuniePop also lets you customize the appearance of the girls, so you can make them as different as can be, or make them resemble your real acquaintances (be careful with this). Even the Match3 part of the game is well more sophisticated than others because you have to plan your ways with girls and thus build your strategy for more than one level. But everything in this game takes some effort.

Knowing the girls better than they expect lets you take them by surprise and enchant in the right manner.

As for the former, there are dialogs you can enter to start the conversation or ask her out. Each girl has her own preferences in the way she wants to be treated or the gifts she likes to receive. There are girls who your character (it can be male or female) can conquer. The idea of the game is in combining dating simulation and Match-3. It’s quite plain (though colorful), and looks rather like reading a magazine (mangazine) than watching videos.

Like in harem anime series, you enjoy the choice of cuties that don’t try to hide their goodies, so there are bedroom scenes, their explicitness depending on the game version. Assuming you’re not a moralist (otherwise, what’cha doin’ here?) and enjoy beautiful girls drawn in a manga-like manner, chances are you will love it.
